#376 The Relationship Reset: Self-Worth, Connection, and Coming Home to Peace
If there's one thing that touches every part of our lives, from parenting to productivity, it’s the quality of our relationships. Whether it's with a partner, children, coworkers, or clients, how we connect, communicate, and care shapes everything else we do.
On this episode of The CPA MOMS Podcast, host Nicole Kehl sat down with Dave and Yvette Ulloa, the husband-and-wife duo behind Warriors and Queens. Their story is one of personal transformation and shared mission. From building an eight-figure business to nearly divorcing, they chose to fight for their marriage and now help others do the same.
From Business Partners to Emotional Strangers
On the outside, Dave and Yvette had it all. A booming travel business, global adventures, and the kind of life many people dream of. But behind closed doors, they were disconnected and exhausted. Their success was real, but the foundation underneath it was cracking.
What changed everything was a realization that success in one area means very little if another area is falling apart. That awareness led them to take what they call radical responsibility. For an entire year, they committed to learning from the best, including relationship expert Alison Armstrong, with the goal of understanding each other rather than trying to fix or change one another.
That decision became the turning point not only in their marriage, but in their purpose.
Understanding Differences Is Essential
One of the biggest lessons Dave and Yvette teach is that men and women are wired differently, biologically and emotionally. These differences influence how we communicate, process stress, and respond to conflict.
Women often operate with what they describe as diffuse awareness. This means noticing everything at once, from unfinished chores to emotional shifts to work deadlines. Men tend to operate with single focus, which allows them to concentrate deeply on one thing at a time. This difference alone can create resentment if it is misunderstood.
When couples assume their partner should see, feel, and respond the same way they do, frustration builds quickly. Dave and Yvette emphasize that understanding these differences is not about excusing behavior. It is about learning how to communicate in a way that brings out the best in each other.
Stop Frog Farming and Coal Mining
In their work, Dave and Yvette use two powerful metaphors that resonated deeply in this conversation.
Frog farming happens when women unintentionally diminish the men in their lives through criticism, control, or taking over. Over time, capable men can become passive, disconnected, or withdrawn.
Coal mining happens when men apply too much pressure, anger, or emotional distance, or sometimes not enough engagement at all. This causes women to feel unsafe, unseen, or emotionally shut down.
These patterns are often learned behaviors rooted in past experiences, not intentional harm. The good news is that they are reversible. With awareness, accountability, and intentional communication, couples can stop undermining each other and start building each other up.
The Power of Creating Hero Moments
One of the most memorable stories Dave shared involved something simple, a loose door handle at home. Instead of fixing it herself or calling a handyman, Yvette asked Dave if he could help solve a problem because it would help her feel safe.
That small request created a hero moment. Dave felt needed, trusted, and appreciated. Yvette felt supported and cared for. These moments may seem small, but stacked together, they change the entire tone of a relationship.
Men are wired to provide and protect. Women are wired to create connection and safety. When each partner learns how to honor the other’s natural strengths, relationships shift dramatically.
Why This Matters for CPA Moms
The health of your relationships affects everything, your energy, your confidence, your leadership, and your well-being. When your home life feels tense or disconnected, it is nearly impossible to show up fully in your career. When your relationships are supportive and grounded, everything feels more manageable.
For CPA moms balancing motherhood, business ownership, and personal growth, this episode is a powerful reminder that success does not require sacrifice in every other area of life. Strong relationships do not compete with ambition. They support it.
When you invest in communication, appreciation, and understanding at home, you also strengthen how you show up with your clients, your team, and your children.
